The Film 'Together' Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a test for long-term couples who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your loved one and stream Together. The 2025 indie hit has now made its online premiere via Hulu. At first glance, it might appear like conventional physical horror, but inside Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the first full-length movie for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a particular energy to their roles, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a committed partnership.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the urban environment to the countryside for her career. A somewhat stereotypical story element, sure, but that’s largely where the tropes cease. Together becomes as much a psychological exploration of the pair’s relationship as it is a film about physical terror.

A Paranormal Spark

While trekking near their country house, a tempest descends, and Millie and Tim discover an hole in the earth. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.

The whole movie is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing elements of hallucinatory nightmares, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something disturbing). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and delivers them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Nuanced Portrayals

A significant portion of Together is solely the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is waning due to a distance. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve relocated rural and distant from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and relies on Millie for transportation.

The film's most intelligent aspect in Together avoids making either of his characters the clear bad guy.

The couple confront the kind of problems that come with any relationship a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for one another. They find humor with each other, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an inescapable undercurrent of doubt about their relationship.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these fears of excessive reliance and totally devoting oneself to another person, the metaphor never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the supernatural and the personal work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for staying single. Conversely, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them reconcile.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the ending plant anxiety and horror, or a heartwarming sense of hope? Will you see yourself in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply look at your significant other and state, “We could get through that together”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is streaming on the streaming service Hulu as of this moment.
